Liberalization of Agriculture – Quashing of APMC Act
In 20th century, Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Act was required to safeguard farmers’ interests. Direct buyers were far off. No organized markets existed for bulk sales. Contract farming concept did not exist. Farmers lacked buyers and markets to sell their produce. But in 21st century, APMC Act is stifling the growth of agriculture and farmers. It is leading to cartelisation by traders and stopping free movement of essential commodities. Today, APMC act is bane for farmers and boon for middlemen, traders, wholesellers and exploitative companies.

‘Imprison’ing India’s Independence Day!
On the eve of 15th August 1947, Lord Mountbatten, the last viceroy of colonial India handed over the reign of the Indian empire to the to-be Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Addressing the crowd, Nehru spoke of a tryst with destiny, a pledge being fulfilled, of waking up to life and freedom and being the master of its own future. Rightfully these words were greeted with a huge roar and accepted by the entire nation. Never had the nation been so alive or so united. These words have perhaps never been matched by the sixty threee independence speeches we have heard.

Poverty Estimates In India – A Farce?
Consider this. Rural dwellers in North Haryana are twice as likely to become crorepatis as the urban city dwellers of Bangalore. This finding comes from the National Council for Applied Economic Research. Villages, which used to give dowry in the form of cattle earlier, are now doing the same with sedans and televisions. As much as one-fifth of all village households get their primary income from either a business or salaried jobs. They do not get their main income from farming.
